Highlights of June Meeting

BUSINESS

Walter Babst presided over the meeting held at Harland Johnson's workshop June 28, 2005. Fourteen members were present.

Business items:

  • Treasurer Jim Sanguinetti reported a Guild bank balance of approximately $1752. Currently there are 42 paid up members and 2 honorary members.
  • Following a discussion of problems with the bandsaw used during the boat hull resaw operation in April, Wayne Thompson agreed to follow up with the bandsaw owner to get more details.
  • Babst highlighted an extensive article in the Thursday, June 24 issue of the Mandeville Picayune, entitled "Local woodcarvers enjoy cutting up at meetings," which featured a photo of June Blanchard holding a plaque presented to her by the Pontchartrain Wood Carvers Club after the death of Johhny Blanchard, a Woodcarber Club member who was also long time Guild member. The article prompted a discussion of possible publicity for the Guild including the idea of contacting the adult woodworking class teacher at Fontainbleau High School in Mandeville to see if our Guild could make a presentation about our activities.
  • Lachlan Vass announced that he has a large dogwood tree that is available for the taking. Contact him at 985-898-2070.
  • SHOW AND TELL

There were no items brought in for Show and Tell.

    Puzzle #2 on the right.

    DEMONSTRATIONS

Don McLaren was scheduled to demonstrate construction of a bandsaw box on Johnson's Jet bandsaw, which had been fitted out with a new 1/8" blade the previous day. But Murphy's Law prevailed -- the blade failed at the weld, and the demonstration had to be aborted. It will be attempted again at the July meeting. Hopefully, Dick Gahn has better equipment!

The evening turned into a social session of tall tales and a browsing session in Johnson's collection room adjacent to the workshop.
