DONALD BRUCE McLAREN

1929-2005

Don McLaren, a long time member of the St. Tammany Woodworkers Guild, passed away October 28, 2005 in Dallas following a tough battle with lung cancer. He is survived by his two sons, Russell & Andrew, and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Sally in 2004.

Don will be remembered by his fellow woodworkers for several interesting demonstrations over the years (the most recent at the July meeting), his dedication to detail and pursuit of excellence in his work. He was also an active member of the Bayou Woodturners Club. At the gathering following his memorial service, guests were invited to take one of the elegant pens he had turned from an astonishing variety of rare woods.

A memorial service was held on November 3 at New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Mandeville. Memorial gifts may be directed to the American Lung Association.

Highlights of October Meeting

BUSINESS

Walter Babst presided over the meeting held at Dick Gahn's workshop October 25, 2005. Seventeen members were present.

The first part of the meeting was taken up with an exchange of news of members' status following Hurricane Katrina.

Members were shocked to learn that Don McLaren was in palliative care in Dallas following a sudden recurrence of lung cancer which had metastasized to other parts of his body.

We also learned that Jim Sanguinetti, who had been hospitalized with suspected West Nile fever, had suffered a stroke and was currently hospitalized in Regency Hospital in Covington.

Jack Williams, who joined the Guild in May and will be remembered for his excellent demonstration of building a mountain dulcimer, evacuated to Hot Springs, Arkansas, and decided to move there permanently. We are sorry to lose him.

In Sanguinettis' absence, Chic Dausch reported that the Guild bank balance was currently $1792, with very few bills outstanding. Babst will investigate the options for changing the bank signing authority while Sanguinetti is hospitalized.

Babst confirmed that the Christmas Banquet will be at the Tchefuncte Country Club on Saturday, December 3 (NOT December 8 as listed in previous newsletters). the Guild will be subsidizing the event, so the cost will only be $10 per person. There will e a cash bar. Please RSVP to Babst no later than the next meeting (November 22) so we can get an accurate head count.

Most of the meeting was taken up with a report by Dick Gahn on the status of preparations for the Madisonville Wooden Boat Show, which has been rescheduled for Saturday and Sunday, November 19 and 20, from 9a-5p. Following are some of the points made in the discussion that ensued:

  • Setup at the Woodworkers Guild Tent will be on Friday November 18 beginning about 10a. Members who are available to help transport materials from Gahn's shop to Madisonville should meet at Gahn's shop at 9a. (This is later than usual to avoid heavy traffic on US190.)
  • Members who have supplies at their homes should bring them to Madisonville on Friday or to Gahn's workshop before Friday.
  • Gahn will give out T-shirts and admission bracelets at the tent on Friday. If you cannot be there Friday, the officials at the entrances on Saturday will let you in if you identify yourself as a member of the Woodworkers Guild.
  • Guild Name Tags will be available for you to wear to identify yourselves to the kids and parents.
  • The boatbuilders signup list as of October 25 is shown below. We need more help on Sunday, so please turn out if you can.
  • Members' spouses are invited to help at the tent -- directing the kids, helping give out boat components, installing sails
  • Members are asked to make Safety their first priority. We will be working with inherently hazardous equipment -- drills, nailers (if you use one, be sure to turn the exhaust nozzle to face away from the children!), and hot glue guns. We need to be especially alert so that no eager and curious children suffer any injuries or frightening incidents. And of course we need to be watchful for our own safety.
  • Although most of the Guild participants are experienced, for the benefit of newer members we are including a checklist of supplies below.
  • Woodworkers' Checklist for Madisonville Boat Show

All participants have their own methods, tips, and ideas, but here's a list to think about as you pack for the show (no particular order, and many are optional):

Note: Electricity and compressed air will be available at each workstation.

  • Electric Drill with 1/4" bit
  • Brad nail gun, with 3/4" or 1" brads
  • Glue gun with plenty of glue sticks
  • Small hammer
  • Stool -- (work tables are 30-32" high)
  • Work surface -- 2' x 2' piece of plywood makes a nice surface to work on
  • Rag or brush to clean off surface
  • Sandpaper or sanding block to smooth off hull edges
  • Regular wood glue
  • Pliers (to pull out nails and/or cut off small nails)
  • Small chisel
  • Small modeling saw
  • File
  • Tape Measure
  • Pencil
  • Felt Tip Pen (Sharpies are good for writing kids' names on their boats)
  • Extension cord with power strip
  • If possible, put your name on your tools -- we always have a few left over when we clean up Sunday night.

    SHOW AND TELL

Gerard St. Romain showed another of his minature house facades -- this one an old barn.
