Highlights of November Meeting

BUSINESS

  • Joe Perret presided over the meeting held at Harland Johnson's shop November 28, 2006. Twenty-one members attended, plus one visitor, John Dillon.
  • Dick Gahn recapped the results of the Boat Show -- about 840 boats were assembled for kids. Donations totaled $1443. The new security procedures were not effective on Saturday afternoon, but improved considerably on Sunday. Among suggestions for next year was one to reduce the variety of parts available for selection by kids in order to speed up the process. Another suggestion was to have available a non-assembled "kit" of parts for distribution (for a donation) to parents who show up after the line has closed for the day.

In light of the unstinting support the Maritime Museum has given the Woodworkers Guild, Gahn moved that we make a donation to the Museum. After a discussion, it was agreed to donate $500 (to be given in person by Perret and Gahn).

  • Treasurer Bob Christman reported a current bank balance of $2189 before the addition of the Boat Show receipts.
  • Gerard St. Romain is considering a project to construct a wheelchair ramp to the home of an aquaintance, and asked for volunteers to help. Call him at 985-796-1323.
  • Walter Babst has a pecan tree that has been cut into 8' planks. Contact him (985-845-1800) if you're interested in them.
  • Wayne Thompson has several trees that were salvaged from Katrina. If you're interested in cherry, hickory, magnolia, or sassafras, please contact him (985-892-1477).
  • With no new nominations for Guild officers for 2007, a motion to renew the current Executive slate for 2007 was unanimously approved.
  • SHOW AND TELL

  • Paul Robin showed an oak vase that was his first attempt at turning. It was finished with a honey pine stain and four coats of polyurethane.
  • Harland Johnson showed an oak floor stand and candle holder for an Advent Wreath that he made for Hosanna Lutheran Church in Mandeville.
  • Bob Christian showed and explained the construction of knife holders that he made as Christmas presents, and gave out copies of the directions. He also distributed a list of articles on Bandsaw Resawing for the discussion that followed.
  • DEMONSTRATION -- BANDSAW NIGHT

Joe Perret led a wide ranging discussion of bandsaw topics, following which Dick Gahn demonstrated setting up a band saw for resawing. He had recommended the 1/2" Woodslicer blade for resawing, and by coincidence one was available to mount on Johnson's bandsaw. After numerous readjustments to accomodate the new blade, the saw was used to resaw several thin slices. No woodworkers were hurt in the process.

    Christmas Banquet

Once again, thanks to the arrangements made by Bob Christman the Christmas Banquet at the Tchefunte Country Club on December 7 was an unqualified success for the attendees.

Apologies to any members missing from the photos -- this was strictly amateur photography.

In his after-dinner remarks, President Joe Perret lauded the efforts of spouses who helped out by putting in long hours of hard work at the Boat Festival, and recognized them individually with bouquets.

Perret concluded with a special tribute to long time member Ed Beshoner for the wide range of unselfish, hardworking help he has given the Guild in general and to individual members in particular, always with patience and humor.

    PLANNING FOR 2007

The newly re-elected executive committee met on January 11 to begin planning this year's activities, some of which are listed in the calendar of events below. Among the ideas which were tabled for discussion at a regular meeting of the Guild were:

  • A "garage sale" evening, for members to bring surplus woodworking items to trade or sell
  • A "roving tour" evening, during which small groups of members would spend time visiting two or three members' shops, giving an opportunity to those who don't have the space for a large group meeting to show how they have set up their workshops
  • A field trip to Riverside Lumber in East New Orleans
  • A "challenge" project, in which a small kit of woodpieces is distributed to members at a meeting to be built and returned for judging at a future meeting
  • A "Boats for Kids" effort at one of the local fire stations during their family visit events
  • Please give these some thought and be ready to comment at the January 23 meeting.
