FAMILY AFFAIR

The Guild's "Boats for Kids" tent at the 2007 Madisonville Wooden Boat Festival had family members on both sides of the tables. Here Guild Secretary Harland Johnson finishes a boat for a young customer, his grand-daughter Kathlyn, while Nick, grandson of Guild member Dick Gahn, helps the customers pick out parts and carry them to work stations. Almost 1100 boats were assembled by Guild members, their families and friends for eager kids during the two-day show. More photos below.

Highlights of August Meeting

BUSINESS

  • Joe Perret presided over the meeting held at Dick Gahn's shop September 25, 2007. Nine members attended.
  • Dick Gahn went over the details for the Oct 13-14 Madisonville Wooden Boat Festival, reminding members that we need workers. Members, their families and friends are sought for both days. Perret will have the free entrance passes and T-shirts. The plan is to set up Friday, meeting at Dick's house around 8am to load out equipment and supplies, then set up in the tent at Madisonville, followed by lunch at Morton's.
  • Perret asked members to start thinking about the Christmas banquet, scheduled for Thursday, December 6
  • Perret also asked members to consider nominating members as Guild officers for 2008.

SHOW AND TELL

  • Brian Harrell showed a utility bench made of pine with hardwood pegs.
  • Eric Carter showed photos of his newly completed wood paneled den.
  • Joe Perret gave out copies of the Highland Hardware catalog. The store, located in Atlanta, has the best band saw blades available. You can also browse the Highland Hardware website.

DEMONSTRATION

Dick Gahn used a plan from one of the books recently added to our library by Jerry Markowitz to show the steps involved in making a curved bandsaw box. The desired final product is shown above left. It is made from cypress trimmed with dark mahogany. As shown above right, he began by making a pattern from 1/4" plywood and traced it onto a 3"x3"x8" cypress block.
Bandsaw setup is very important. The blade needs to be true and tight, and sized small enough to be able to cut the small radius curves. The first step is to cut out the center piece that will form the drawer.
Next he cut the desired number of compartments (two in this design) in that piece. The piece is sanded and set aside.
Next he finished cutting the desired external curves on the outside piece. It was sanded, and the two pieces were checked for fit as shown on the above right. The next steps would be to add a back to the box, and a front and back to the drawer. Final step would be finishing, and the addition of a drawer pull, to produce the box shown in the first photo in this series.

Gahn made it all look easy, as usual, and it's a shame there wasn't a larger audience to enjoy his hard work. Thanks very much, Dick!
